Description
Step back into a reimagined Hoenn, now overtaken by a zombie apocalypse! In this revival of Cutlerine’s iconic 2010 ROM hack, you play as Brendan’s younger sibling, awakening with no memory in a ruined region. With the help of Professor Birch, set out to uncover the mystery behind your brother’s disappearance and the origin of the undead outbreak. Traverse a Hoenn that’s almost beyond recognition, battling zombies, encountering bizarre new characters, and navigating a story filled with dark humor and unique twists at every turn.
Features
- Expanded Zombie Pokémon: Numerous zombie Pokémon are now accessible beyond the original two, with additions inspired by various sources like XtraSnakewood, Snakewood DX, and RetroNC’s videos, plus new creations. Capture these unique Pokémon using the Necro Ball, a rare item crucial for building your undead team. While zombie Pokémon are powerful, each Necro Ball is precious—use them wisely!
- High Difficulty: Designed for players seeking a tough challenge, battles have been balanced to remain competitive yet fair, with a range of AI improvements. For those preferring a less intense experience, a “Vanilla mode” is also available.
- New Plague Type and Weather (Soot): Introducing the Plague type (a renamed and refined version of Disease-type), these Pokémon deal increased damage but cannot switch out. This addition is complemented by a new weather effect, Soot, which impacts certain moves and types, adding fresh tactical considerations.
- Balanced Pokémon Stats and Abilities: All 360+ Pokémon are given unique roles without overloading the game. Less-used abilities now have new effects, such as Stall skipping turns and Sand Veil boosting Defense in Sandstorm, adding strategic depth and viability to a wider range of Pokémon.
- No Grinding Needed: EVs and IVs have been removed, with DemICE’s EXP gain system enabling smoother leveling without needing level caps. Players are encouraged to catch and use more Pokémon from early on, creating a more dynamic party experience.
- Exploration Encouraged: Venture off the beaten path to uncover hidden items and surprises behind trees, rocks, or in secluded corners, rewarding thorough exploration with unique finds.
- Revamped Graphics: Many Fakémon and characters have been redesigned to enhance the original Snakewood aesthetic while retaining its charm. Higher-quality sprites and updated looks refresh the visual experience, though some familiar faces remain untouched for nostalgia.
- Resource Management: The game leans into a dystopian atmosphere by limiting resources, and making each decision count. Consumables are finite, so strategize carefully to make the most of what you have.
- Modernized Content and QoL Improvements: Physical/special split, Fairy type, new evolutions, additional zombies, and certain unused Pokémon like Demoneon and Toxeon are introduced. Plus, regional forms are included, offering even more variety and a few hidden secrets.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is there/will there be a Discord Server?
A: No, there isn’t a Discord server planned. I’ve heard stories about the chaos that can occur in fan game servers, and it’s not something I’m interested in managing. Unless someone else wants to run it, there won’t be a server.
Q: Will I be able to catch “a/b/c”?
A: The plan is to make all Pokémon available, including zombies and previously unavailable Pokémon like Boilbasaur and Mutagon. However, some will be harder to obtain; for example, Pokémon like A Monster and Stitched will only appear late in the game, and zombies require the limited Necro Ball for capture.
Q: Is it compatible with Joiplay?
A: Unsure. Joiplay compatibility isn’t in our scope, so we won’t be able to provide support specifically for it.
Q: Why are there inconsistencies in art?
A: It’s still a work in progress. Different artists (who I awkwardly haven’t introduced) are contributing, leading to some variety in style. Additionally, I’ve contributed some art, which may vary in quality and style.
Q: Can this game be played as a challenge run (Nuzlocke, Monotype)? Will Lunatic Mode support it?
A: Stygian Snakewood, especially in Lunatic Mode, wasn’t balanced for challenge runs like Nuzlocke, so those may be very difficult or impossible. Vanilla difficulty may be more manageable for such challenges, but I didn’t design the game specifically for these modes.
Q: How does Wurmple’s evolution work now?
A: Check the sign in the southern part of Route 104 and then Wurmple’s name in other languages. Now, Wurmple evolves based on the time of day: it becomes Silcoon/Beautifly during the day and Cascoon/Dustox at night.
Q: What are Plague’s type advantages and disadvantages?
A: Plague type is super-effective against Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Grass, and Psychic. It is weak to Bug, Poison, and Psychic, while Ghost, Steel, and Ice resist it. (Fire might also resist Plague, depending on feedback).
Terrible experience gain. Making this terrible doesn’t make it challenging, just annoying. Get regular Pokemon exp gain back to normal. Then you’ll have a game of Pokemon.
