Description

Pokémon WoofGold & MasterSilver is a Vanilla Plus ROM hack that enhances HeartGold and SoulSilver with refined improvements while staying true to the original experience. Expect a wider Pokémon variety, more engaging boss battles, and a smoother level curve, making the adventure feel fresh while preserving its classic charm.

Features

  • Expanded Encounters: Every Gen 2 Pokémon is now available within Johto. Some Pokémon can be found earlier, such as Larvitar in Union Cave B1F instead of the Safari Zone. A few Pokémon have been added to routes for thematic flavor, like Chansey near the Day-Care. The core feel of each route remains intact, with common encounters staying mostly the same. New encounters typically have a 5-20% chance of appearing, though some remain rare.
  • Adjusted Level Curve: The original HGSS level curve, especially for wild Pokémon, followed an outdated pattern. This version smooths it out, making progression more consistent with modern Pokémon games. The changes become more pronounced after Morty and are especially noticeable in Kanto, which originally had very little level scaling.
  • Overhauled Boss Battles:
    • Gym Leaders are redesigned with unique battle styles and personalities, inspired by how Whitney functions in the base game. She serves as a strategic gatekeeper, and all Gym Leaders now provide similar levels of challenge while remaining distinct.
    • Jasmine is designed as if she’s the seventh Gym Leader. She, Chuck, and Pryce can still be battled in any order, but Jasmine is now the hardest to challenge first. Some of her dialogue has been adjusted to reflect this.
    • Rival Battles have been revamped, including changes to his team composition and dialogue. His team evolves based on his journey, reflecting his growth. Mid-to-late Johto, he temporarily falls behind before catching up again.
    • Giovanni’s battle, accessible via the Celebi event before Clair, is now one of the hardest fights in the game. His ace is level 77, making him a high-level optional challenge, similar to Jasmine’s redesign.
  • Revised Evolution Methods:
    • All trade evolutions have been replaced with in-game methods.
    • Evolutions previously locked to post-game are now available earlier.
    • Some Pokémon may hold their evolution items in the wild.
    • New Pokéathlon rewards:
      • Up-Grade – Sunday
      • Dubious Disc – Thursday
      • Shiny Stone – Friday
      • Other evolution items – Saturday
  • Buffed Pokémon:
    • Many underpowered Pokémon in HGSS have received small but meaningful stat buffs and moveset adjustments to make them more viable without changing their core identity.
    • Example: Magcargo gets +30 BST across three stats, an improved level-up movepool, and an earlier evolution at level 30.
    • Ledian & Ariados received +60 BST to compensate for their late evolutions compared to their Gen 1 counterparts.
    • Some Pokémon received additional flavor moves, like Typhlosion learning Earth Power via Heart Scale, not because it needs it, but because it fits.

Hard Mode vs. Simple Version

Hard Mode

The game’s standard mode is designed to be more challenging than the original HGSS but is not a full difficulty hack. However, some mechanics felt slightly off from this vision, so a Hard Mode version was created.

In Hard Mode:

  • All trainers have perfect IVs.
  • Boss encounters feature:
    • Higher levels (except for their ace).
    • Better movesets and held items.
    • Some bosses have an additional Pokémon.

It’s still not an extreme difficulty hack, but battles demand more strategy than the standard version.

Simple Version

For those who prefer a more straightforward experience, this version keeps all the core improvements while avoiding additional difficulty boosts. It includes:

  • New encounters to improve variety.
  • A smoother level curve that aligns better with other games.
  • Reworked Boss Battles that provide a fair but engaging challenge.
  • Adjusted Evolution Methods to remove trade requirements.
  • Buffed Pokémon, with updated stats, abilities, and movesets.
  • The option to play Hard Mode if desired.

Version Exclusives

  • Arcanine in Gold, Ninetales in Silver
  • Ariados in Gold, Ledian in Silver
  • Granbull in Gold, Persian in Silver
  • Gliscor in Gold, Skarmory in Silver
  • Mantine in Gold, Delibird in Silver.

Creator Note

I’ve done rigorous playtesting and I think everything is where I want, but this is my first romhack and I’m using tools I’m unfamiliar with. If anyone finds something that contradicts the documentation, is a major bug, or just seems odd, let me know in this thread.
