Introduction
Have you ever felt disappointed looking at the incomplete Procyon and Deneb hacks, wishing you could experience all the new Fakemon, especially if you don’t read Japanese? Well, this ROM Hack is here to fill that gap!
Pokemon Astral Red is my first ROM Hack, and while it may not be overly complex (despite the tremendous amount of work that went into it), it achieves exactly what I set out to do.
Synopsis
In this version of the Kanto region, all of the Pokémon have been replaced due to a mysterious dimensional shift that no one seems to acknowledge (in other words: I didn’t change the story, just the Pokémon). Other than that, it’s your typical Fire Red adventure, complete with a functional (and mostly untouched) post-game.
Features
- New Pokémon Roster: All Pokémon exclusive to Procyon and Deneb have replaced the original Kanto Pokémon, with the exception of Drowzee and Hypno. To complete the Dex, additional Fakemon from Altair/Sirius and Vega were included.
- English Naming: Pokémon without translated names were given English names based on their appearance, description, and characteristics.
- Balanced Variety: Just like in the official games, some Pokémon are strong, some are decent, and some are just okay.
- Authentic Sprites and Sounds: All Pokémon have accurate front and back sprites, as well as matching cries.
- Move Sets: Pokémon move sets are aligned as closely as possible with those in Procyon and Deneb. While no new moves were added, some existing moves were adjusted in terms of type and damage for balance and accuracy.
- Correct Stats and Attributes: Each Pokémon has the appropriate types, stats, EV values, catch rates, base XP, growth speed, base friendship, egg groups, and heights/weights from Procyon and Deneb. For any missing values, sensible or amusing substitutes were used (there’s one particularly large fish to find!).
- Appropriate Abilities: Pokémon have the correct abilities from Procyon and Deneb, or ones that make sense given their type and characteristics if the original abilities don’t exist in Fire Red.
- Evolution Methods: Pokémon evolve as they do in Procyon and Deneb. If an evolution method isn’t present in Fire Red, it’s been adapted to something that makes the most sense. PokeDex entries now provide evolution instructions.
- Level 42 Evolution: Any Pokémon that typically evolves with a stone or through friendship will also evolve at level 42.
- No Exclusives: All Pokémon are available to be caught or obtained—no version exclusives.
- Menu Updates: Important menus now display the correct Pokémon names.
- Trainer Overhauls: Gym Leaders and Elite Four Pokémon have moves that belong to their updated rosters and match their types, so you know what to expect. Other trainers have updated moves, though not necessarily the correct Pokémon for their trainer type—good luck!
- Adjusted Locations: Pokémon locations have been adjusted for logical consistency (no more fishing up cats… hopefully).
- Map Edit: There is one singular map edit—see if you can find it.
- Easter Eggs: A handful of secrets and easter eggs are waiting to be discovered.
Along with these features, the author has also implemented various QoL improvements into Pokemon Astral Red, which are listed below:
Quality of Life Improvements
- Fairy Type Added: The Fairy type is truly added, not just replacing the ??? type.
- Infinite TM Use: TMs are now reusable.
- Running Indoors: You can now run inside buildings.
- Updated HMs: Some HMs have been made more useful, though they are still not deletable (maybe in a future update).
- XP for Caught Pokémon: Fixed the XP gain from catching Pokémon—if it doesn’t work, repatch with the latest patch at the bottom of the post.
- Skip PokeCenter Flashbacks: No more flashbacks when healing at PokeCenters.
- Default Fast Text and Stereo Sound: Text speed is set to fast and sound to stereo by default.
- BW2 Repel System: The BW2-style repel system is included.
- Nature Stat Colors: Natures now have colored stats to indicate increases and decreases.
- No Item Usage Animation: Item usage animations have been removed.
- Low HP Beep: The low HP sound beeps three times and then stops.
- Move Learning Cursor: The cursor will hover over the new move when learning moves to prevent accidental deletions.
- No Beginner Intro: The beginner intro is skipped when starting a new game.
- Fast Egg Hatching: All eggs hatch super fast, though egg moves remain untouched—have fun!
V1.2 Creator Note
- Due to removing the “use items animations” you cannot evolve two Pokemon using evolution stones in a row in the same place (map). The game will freeze. Avoid this by moving to a new place (map) before evolving the next one (in/out of a building, one route to another, route to a town, etc.). I think it is some sort of cache issue, but it isn’t game breaking, so just be cognizant of it.
- “Caught Pokemon Give XP” broke the entire game. It has been remedied by being removed. However, you might still receive XP for the first Pokemon you catch every time you boot the game. I have not seen this cause any crashes in multiple different save files, it doesn’t happen every time, and I don’t know why its happening.
- I don’t know why some people’s games are crashing when they fight Luvdisc. I was only able to duplicate it using the pre-patched ROM from PokeHarbor [Admin Note: D:]. Every time I’ve patched it myself I don’t have a problem. I use mGBA on PC and Delta on iOS for emulators, so it might also be an emulator incompatibility.
- If your Gym Leader’s teams don’t seem to match their type, or trainers randomly seem to have too strong/weak Pokemon, you’re using an old version.
- Patch to a Fire Red 1.0 ROM. I know I said earlier to use a Fire Red 1.1, but I was mistaken. I thought I had started with a 1.1 base but I had not. This might solve a lot of problems. Everyone’s best bet is to patch a clean 1.0 (Squirrels is what I tested on). Saves should work between versions, but no promises. [Admin Note: I’ve patched it to 1.0 squirrels, as the creator stated]
If you face any bugs or issues or have any questions about the game, you can report/ask them on Pokemon Astral Red’s official PokeCommunity thread.

I can’t find any documents for the game. I can’t seem to find a lot of pokemon in a location they’re supposed to be. Help me please
Insane rom, love it ! Is there the physical/special for the moves btw ?
Great hack. I’m already on Saffron and can’t find Katuna even surfing or fishing with all rods. It’s has a really low encounter rate?
Fish in Pallet Town
I am the creator of this hack. I have taken it down off of PokeCommunity (check the link, its not there). I would like this removed.
Good thing it’s backed up and re-uploaded everywhere else lol. Good rom hack btw
Why you want to remove it tho
Title error it should be fakemon astral red and no need for fakemon it’s not good
Pokemon Africanvs please 😎💪
posted it: https://www.pokeharbor.com/2024/08/pokemon-africanvs/
You have to patch it on with V1.1 otherwise the game will keep on crash when battling with players who uses Luvdisc.
the author said they were mistaken when they said to patch it to a 1.1 from and that it needs to be patched to a 1.0 squirrels rom
Can you upload pokemon Africanvs
I had to fix a game wide trainer corruption. Current version is 1.1.
Is there maybe server discord for future updates ?
There’s a bug on the SS Anne when a trainer sends out luvdisc the game freezes…..but overall I like the designs,I am playing on my boy emulator so I don’t know if anyone else might encounter this bug.
Bro how do you download my boy emulator?
you can get the free version from the play store and for a paid version, you can either buy it off the play store or get it for free from sites like apk pure
Do you know which trainer specifically?
Did it happen more than once?
It happens when misty sends out luvdisc so I restart my save and on the SS Anne there’s a sailor with a luvdisc as well
Try a different emulator. I’ve tried two others and haven’t been able to duplicate it.
The patched version here is done incorrectly by PokeHarbor. Patch your own using the patch on the website. Also, this is now the past version. Current version is 1.1. You also need to make sure you are patching to a Fire Red 1.1 ROM.
I’ve updated it to the latest v1.2 now, thanks 😀
Game crashes on second gym when Misty sends out her Luvdisc as well.
I haven’t been able to duplicate a Luvdisc crash on mGBA and Delta.

These are not the fakemon from Pokémon deneb and procyon…
They definitely are.
Brock only having one pokemon and the second rival battle he doesn’t even have his starter this is a waste of my time
Use the new 1.2.
I also encountered that bug, but mine when Misty sends her Luvdisc then the screen freeze
Use the new 1.2
