A team composed of a single type can be vulnerable to attacks that type is weak against, resulting in a total-party knockout. Pokémon types are used in a variety of ways. Each species has a type associated with it, such as Charmander being a Fire-Type Pokémon, but there are also types associated with Pokémon moves, such as Earthquake being a Ground-type move. Moves that match a Pokémon’s species type deal bonus damage (known as Same-Type Attack Bonus), but most Pokémon can also learn moves that are not of their specific type. Charmander, for example, can learn the Flying-type move Acrobatics, while Pikachu can learn the Steel-type move Iron Tail. While Electric-type moves have no effect on Ground-type Pokémon, Steel-type moves do, and Electric-type moves are particularly effective against Water-type Pokémon, which are resistant to Steel.

Dual-typing Pokémon, such as Charizard’s Fire and Flying, gain more STAB moves, but they also gain the weaknesses of both types, making defense more difficult.
